Privacy Policy

Rian Thai ("the App") is developed and maintained by Franziskus Borrmann. This policy explains what the App does with your data. The short version: it stays on your device.

Data We Collect

Rian Thai has no account, no login and no registration, and you can use every part of it without telling us who you are. Your flashcards, answers and progress never leave your device. The one thing that does is anonymous usage data, and only while you leave that switched on in Settings.

The one thing that does leave your device is anonymous product-usage analytics: which screens are reached and which actions are taken, never who you are or what you are studying. It is described in full under Analytics and Crash Reporting below, and you can switch it off in Settings.

On-Device Storage

Your flashcard progress, review history, statistics and preferences are stored locally on your device using Apple's Core Data framework. This information never leaves your device unless you choose to export it.

Because everything is local, your progress is tied to the device it was made on. Settings includes Export Progress and Import Progress so you can save a copy or move it to a new device yourself. Deleting the App deletes your progress with it.

iCloud

The current version of Rian Thai does not sync your progress to iCloud. Nothing is written to your iCloud account. If cross-device sync is added in a future version, this policy will be updated before that version ships.

Analytics and Crash Reporting

Rian Thai uses PostHog to understand which parts of the App people actually reach. Events are processed on servers in the European Union. There is no advertising identifier, no IDFA or IDFV, and no cross-app or cross-site tracking of any kind. Your events are not linked to your identity, because the App never learns it: the identifier attached to them is a random value generated on your device the first time you open the App.

Your IP address is not stored with the events. Before it is discarded, our analytics provider derives an approximate location from it, so each event carries a country and a city. The App itself never asks for or reads your location.

That is the whole list as the App is built today. If it grows, this page changes with it.

What is never sent: flashcard content, your review history, your notes, your search terms, your name, your email address, your contacts or your location.

You can switch this off. In the App, go to Settings → Privacy and turn off Share Anonymous Usage Data. Collection stops immediately and anything queued but not yet sent is discarded.

The App integrates no third-party crash-reporting service. If you have opted in through iOS to share analytics with developers, Apple may provide us with aggregated, anonymised statistics such as crash counts and download numbers. Apple collects this on your behalf under its own privacy policy, we receive it only in aggregate, and it does not identify individual users. You can turn this off in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.

Advertising

The App contains no advertisements and integrates no advertising SDKs.

Purchases

Rian Thai is free and contains no in-app purchases or subscriptions. No payment information is requested or processed. Should paid features be introduced later, billing would be handled entirely by Apple and this policy would be updated first.

Audio and Speech

Pronunciation uses Apple's on-device speech synthesis. The App does not record audio, does not request microphone access, and sends nothing you see or hear to any server.

Notifications

If you enable daily reminders, they are scheduled locally on your device by iOS. No push server is involved and no device token is transmitted.

Third-Party Services

PostHog is the only third-party service the App talks to, acting as a processor on our behalf and only for the anonymous product analytics described above. There are no advertising SDKs and no data brokers. All flashcard content, images and audio are bundled inside the App, so it contacts no server to fetch content. The App works with no network connection at all.

Children's Privacy

The App asks nobody for their name, email address or any other personal detail, children included. The anonymous usage data described above is the only thing it sends, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 13.

Your Rights

Your flashcards, answers and progress live on your device and are entirely under your control: export them, import them, or clear them from Settings at any time. We never receive them, so there is nothing there for us to disclose or correct.

The anonymous usage events are different. They do reach our analytics provider, and while they say nothing about who you are, they are kept under the random ID your device generated. We cannot tell which events are yours, so if you want them deleted you have to tell us that ID: it is shown in Settings under Share Anonymous Usage Data, and you can copy it from there. Email it to support@rianthai.app and we will delete every event stored under it. Switching the setting off stops any further events immediately.

Changes to This Policy

This policy will be updated if the App's behaviour changes, with a revised effective date. Where a change means the App starts handling data differently, the policy will be updated before that version is released.
